The Ferrari Mondial 8, launched at the 1980 Geneva Salon, effectively replaced the 308 GT4 Dino and followed a similar layout, with a 3-litre V8 mounted amidships in the tubular chassis frame and two-plus-two seating capacity. Named after the legendary four-cylinder sports racing cars of the Fifties, the Mondial utilised Ferrari's 3.0 litre quad-camshaft V8 engine, with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection and five-speed transaxle. Following criticism of Bertone's angular styling efforts for the 308 GT4, Ferrari handed responsibility for shaping the Mondial back to Pininfarina and the car had typically timeless lines. With a beautifully equipped cabin, decked out in hand-stitched Connolly hides, the Mondial was a popular choice for Ferrari enthusiasts seeking a mid-engined sports car with the added versatility of occasional rear seats. In 1982, extra power (up from 214 to 240 bhp) was delivered thanks to new four-valves-per-cylinder technology and the Mondial was renamed the Quattrovalvole, while in 1985 the engine's capacity was enlarged to 3.2 litres, further increasing power output to 260 bhp. In this final iteration, the Mondial remains one of the most affordable, reliable and practical Ferraris around and an excellent choice for the first time Maranello buyer.
