The first M Type appeared at the 1928 London Motor show, it took a following six months before it was in full production. Once available it sold extremely well, over 3,000 cars in the following 3 years.
At the same time Austin were producing very attractive sporting versions of the Seven, however the Midget (as the M Type was called) was technically superior with its overhead cam engine producing more power than its side valve competition. With its racing style pointed boat tail and a small V windscreen the Midget was a far more attractive look than the average sports car of the day.
With an all up weight of only 499kg (1,100lbs) it was as fast as the bigger MG,while being very nimble, it was highly regarded as a real sports car.
