The second generation E32 7-Series BMW was something of a watershed when launched in 1986, with the Bavarian marque overtaking traditional rivals Mercedes-Benz in the luxury car stakes both in technological terms and, ultimately, sales figures. The stylish lines of the second-generation 7-Series hid an advanced design, bristling with electronics controlling everything from the seats to the amount of wheelspin during acceleration. Topping the new range was the 750 with BMW's first V12 engine, the 24-valve M70 unit developing 300 bhp at 5200 rpm and delivering stunning performance for such a big car - all E32 models were electronically governed to a maximum 250 km/h but unrestricted the 750 could attain much higher speeds. The V12 models can be differentiated from the lesser sixes by the wider kidney grilles and could be had in a longer wheelbase model, with an additional 114mm added to the rear passenger compartment. Packed with features only now becoming commonplace on luxury saloons, the innovative E32 7-Series still offers exemplary road manners, levels of equipment and German reliability at an affordable price. Always built in limited numbers, very few were ever sold in Australia, where the list price was an astronomical $225,000 back in 1990 and were the last word in German luxury cars at the time, offering incredible value for money today.
