Launched at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show, Porsche's replacement for the 356 was initially badged the 901 (objections from Peugeot saw the car renamed the 911) and went on to become one of the best-loved, fastest selling and most widely recognised sports cars of all time. Powered by a rear-mounted air-cooled flat-six engine of two-litres capacity, 911s built in the Sixties were characterised by fantastically communicative steering, sharp handling and willing performance - thanks in large part to their relatively low weight. From its earliest inception as a 2-litre unit in 1963, the flat-six engine underwent constant development and a high performance variant, dubbed the S, was announced in 1966, with 160 bhp on tap and distinctive Fuchs alloy wheels. For 1969, Porsche redesigned the 911 on a slightly longer wheelbase and the 911S received Bosch fuel injection, along with the option of a semi-automatic Sportomatic transmission. The original 2-litre six was enlarged to 2.2-litres, raising output for the flagship 911S to 180 bhp in September 1969. Minor changes to the interior, an aluminium engine cover and better anti-corrosion were announced in September 1970, further enhancing the 911s desirability. In total some 1,430 911S D-series coupes and 788 targas were built prior to the introduction of the 2.4 model in August 1971, making these early chrome bumpered cars both rare and sought after today.
