Johann Puch originally made his name producing bicycles in Graz, Austria in the early part of the 20th Century, moving on to motorcycles and small cars and supplied the Austro-Hungarian army during the First World War. The Puch company merged with Austro-Daimler in 1925 and this became Steyr-Daimler-Puch in 1934, with automobile production discontinued. Puch began building motor scooters in 1952, typical of the contemporary Italian designs from Vespa, utilising a 125cc two-stroke single-cylinder engine developing around 5 hp and a three-speed gearbox. With the convenience of an electric starter and decent weather protection, the Puch scooters enjoyed a good reputation in the 1950s and sold well across Northern Europe. Today, the Puch is a well made and stylish alternative to the more common Vespas and is a reliable classic commuter.
