The Triumph Stag was aimed squarely at the American market and was a full four-seater convertible mixing the Italian style of Giovanni Michelotti with traditional British craftsmanship. Introduced in 1970, an improved Mark 2 version was released in 1973 with alloy wheels and various trim changes - in total just under 26,000 examples were built. The heart of the Stag was a new 3-litre V8 engine based on two Dolomite units with a common crankshaft and developing 145 bhp at 5500 rpm. The V8 had a reputation for overheating when new but specialists have now sorted these problems and with regular maintenance they should be good for 100,000 miles. With the signature T-bar roof and luxuriously trimmed interior combining with the throaty roar of the V8, the Stag remains an intoxicating car to drive - and with the support of enthusiastic Triumph clubs and marque specialists ownership has never been more rewarding.
