The Dodge Phoenix was Chrysler Australia's top of the range model in the 1960s, imported in CKD (Complete Knock Down) kit form and assembled locally using a range of Australian-made components alongside the Valiants. Although based on the American Dodge Dart Phoenix, the Australian version only came out as a four-door sedan when introduced to the local market in 1960 and there was just one engine on offer, the 318-cid V8. Minor trim and sheetmetal changes followed until 1965, when Chrysler began using the Plymouth Fury as the basis for the Aussie Phoenix, with vertically-stacked headlamps and squared-off styling. In 1967, a second body style - the four-door hardtop - was offered, along with the optional 383-cid V8 engine for extra performance. In 1969, the Phoenix was rebodied to become longer, lower and wider in keeping with contemporary styling trends, with horizontal grille and quad headlamps. The Phoenix was eventually phased-out in favour of Chrysler's own long-wheelbase luxury versions of the Valiant, starting with the CH model of 1971, and production ceased here soon afterwards. Today the Phoenix makes a great cruiser, offering classic American looks and smooth V8 performance, good spares availability and support available from local clubs - all at a very affordable price.
