The Oldsmobile division of General Motors had the longest history of all, dating back to 1897 and classics like the Curved Dash model helped establish Ransom Eli Olds' reputation as a maker of quality motor cars. By the Sixties, Oldsmobile had become an upmarket brand within the General Motors Corporation, with a reputation for technical innovation thanks to their pioneering use of front-wheel drive on the Toronado. The 98 was Oldsmobile's flagship model, a name that first appeared in 1941 and carried on through various subsequent generations. The fourth generation appeared in 1965 and for 1969, the 98 was built on a huge 127-inch wheelbase and came in at nearly 19 feet long. Available in various body styles, including the Convertible Coupe, Holiday Hardtop Coupe, Holiday Hardtop Sedan, Town Sedan, Luxury Sedan and Luxury Hardtop Sedan, the 1969 Oldsmobiles had a pointed bonnet extension and heavily sculpted grille. Under the mighty bonnet the standard engine was the 455 Rocket V8 developing 365 hp, with Turbo Hydra-matic 400 transmission and power brakes. Other standard features included power windows, power seats, sports seats, a deluxe steering wheel and electric clock. Optional extras included a tilting telescopic steering wheel, "four seasons" air conditioning, 6-way power seats, power front disc brakes, an AM/FM radio and 8-track stereo, vinyl roof, cruise control and more.
