The original clubman, the Lotus Seven, was announced way back in 1957 and started a trend in high performance, low cost sports cars with only the most minimal concessions to comfort - cycle guards, bolt-on windscreen and a lack of rain protection characterised these early cars. By keeping weight to the absolute minimum and selling the Seven in kit form, Colin Chapman's creation offered unrivalled performance for the price. The Seven remained in production for years before the rights were sold off to Caterham Cars and has inspired generations of clubman builders around the world. Birkin is a South African based company building high quality clubman kits, re-engineered to meet modern safety and emissions standards. The Birkin consists of an epoxy coated steel space frame with aluminium panels, fibreglass guards and nosecone, 45-litre aluminium fuel tank, carbon fibre dash, rack and pinion steering and billet pedal box (adjustable for reach and braking bias). The suspension set-up comprises upper and lower wishbones in Aero tubing, cast and machined uprights, 4-spot aluminium racing calipers, an adjustable stabiliser bar and comes with the option of either a live rear axle or fully independent rear end. The owner/builder would then add the driveline of their choice to complete the package, with most opting for a Ford Zetec or Duratec, or one of several Toyota motors mated to the Ford five-speed gearbox. The Birkin has been designed from the outset to accommodate larger drivers, with the adjustable pedal box and seat and an extensive dealer network throughout Australia provides plenty of support and spares for the owner. Many Birkins have ended up on the track and have achieved numerous successes in the PRB race series.
