Ford's classic F-series pick-ups and trucks have become a legend in their own lifetime and are now America's favourite thing on four wheels, outselling every other passenger vehicle. The second generation F-series was launched in 1953 and remained in production until 1956, featuring more integrated styling with a slant cab window, more passenger space and an anniversary horn button commemorating the 50th year of Ford pick-ups. The 1953 F-series was also the last year the classic Flathead engine, with a new OHV V-8 introduced the following year, although the L-head 215-cid or 254-cid sixes remained a popular choice, usually found with a three-speed gearbox. The Deluxe model came with six chrome spears in the grille along with additional chrome moldings while V-8 models got a chrome emblem in the centre of the grille. The line-up was revised to include the half-tonne F-100, the three-quarter tonne F-250 and one-tonne F-350, replacing the F-1, F-2 and F-3 models respectively. Today, the second generation F-100 Fords are keenly sought after by collectors for their classic style and have been a firm favourite of customisers around the world for many years. Ford built 116.437 pick-ups and a further 9,951 panel trucks for the 1953 model year and the number of surviving examples in Australia is relatively small, ensuring values remain solid into the future.
