American cars hit a high note in 1959, with an abundance of chrome and fins that reached their peak, and the Plymouth range was certainly no exception. Plymouth reshuffled their vehicle line-up for 1959, with the Savoy replacing the Plaza as the entry level model, continuing the trend for naming cars after posh hotels. Powered by a 230-cid six-cylinder engine with an 8:1 compression ratio and developing 132 hp, the Savoy could be had with a 318-cid V8 and a range of transmission options as well. All 1959 Plymouth sedans rans on an 118-inch wheelbase and featured bold styling, with an anodized aluminium eggcrate grille, outwardly canted tail fins and oval tail lights. On the Savoy, a single chrome spear ran almost the full length of the car. Standard equipment was generous, including turn indicators, electric windscreen wipers, twin sun visors, horns, a bumper jack and even five tubeless tyres. Plymouth were still selling strongly for 1959, with an 11.6 percent increase over the previous year and the brand was ranked third overall, although overall market share fell slightly. The Plymouth was popular with taxi drivers and gained notoriety through the film adaption of Stephen King's "Christine", the movie actually using a 1958 Fury.
