Before Jaguar built the XJ-S there was the XJC, a graceful two-door rendition of the highly acclaimed XJ6 (a car often described as one of the most beautiful saloons ever made). The XJ6 range set new standards of refinement, with a ride unmatched by even the top German rivals and ample performance thanks to the 4.2-litre XK engine. The two-door XJC was based on the Series 2 model XJ6, benefiting from ventilated disc brakes with revised master cylinder, new Borg Warner Model 65 automatic transmission and revisions to the bumpers and grille, along with a new dashboard and climate control system. With the same wheelbase as the saloon, the pillarless coupe had plenty of space inside for four adults and longer doors allowed for dignified access to the rear seats. The roof was finished in the favoured Seventies vinyl and the whole effect was very elegant indeed. Inside, the Jaguar retained the Old World atmosphere of rich timber veneers and leather hides, with plenty of luxury touches. As before, the Daimler versions were the most luxurious XJs available, the traditional fluted grille signalling the Sovereign came with better quality fittings, upholstery and equipment levels. In total, there were just 1,677 Daimler Sovereign coupes built and of these, only two were delivered through Jaguar Australia, with a further fifteen examples known to have been privately imported.
