Sitting somewhere between the Mark II compact sports saloon and the more much larger, luxury Mark X model was the S-Type announced by Jaguar in October 1963, combining the best of both these cars to create an excellent mid-sized saloon aimed squarely at the executive middle classes. Incorporating the same independent rear end from the Mark X into the floorpan of the Mark II resulted in a much more refined ride, while the bodywork was altered to resemble the bigger car, particularly at the rear, resulting in more interior and luggage space. In October 1966, the new 4.2-litre XK engine with twin S.U. carburettors and a straight-port head was fitted, along with revised front-end styling modelled on the 420G, and the S-Type was renamed the 420. Braking was by Girling discs at both ends and buyers again had a choice of transmissions - either a Borg Warner Type 8 automatic 'box or a manual with the option of overdrive. The interior, already more luxurious than the standard Mark II, was further refined with a new padded facia displaying a centrally-mounted clock. Long overshadowed in the marketplace by the Mark II, the altogether more sophisticated 420 Compact represents excellent value for money.
