In 1926 Cadillac launched the all-new 90-degree 314 cubic inch V8 engine, the first major reworking of the company's motor since 1915. Another significant change was the adoption of longitudinal semi-elliptic springs at the rear, which helped lower the car and gave a sleeker appearance. To celebrate Cadillac's 25th anniversary in 1927, the company promoted the huge option list with the phrase "50 body style and types in 500 colour and upholstery combinations", offering the customer the ability to individually tailor his or her new car to unprecedented levels. Cadillac's new chief, Lawrence P.Fisher, introduced the Art & Colour Section, headed up by Harley J.Earl, to focused attention on the appearance of the model range, and this ultimately became GM Styling in 1940. Offered in two series, Standard or Custom, the 1927 Cadillac was available with a choice of no less than 18 different Fisher-made bodies and 32 semi-customs by outside coachbuilders. A one-piece windscreen (that folded forward on roadster and phaeton models) was fitted, along with a new walnut instrument panel (with silver inlay), sidelights and 10-inch headlamps. The Standard models were built on a 132-inch wheelbase, with mechanical brakes on all four wheels. With only 8600 Cadillac's built in 1927, it's rare to come across one these high quality American classics today. With ample torque from the V8 engine, smooth gearchange and decent brakes, a restored example is a real pleasure to drive today and would make the perfect car for club runs.
