By the early Twenties Chevrolet had begun making major inroads into Ford's dominance of the domestic market and for 1925 announced the Superior range, a title designed to annoy the Ford top brass. The biggest improvement that year was the one-piece banjo-type back axle with a torque tube that eliminated the vibration inherent in the earlier bevel gear design. For the 1925 model year, Chevrolet revised the design of the engine block, rods and crank but the horsepower rating remained at 26 from the sturdy 171-cid four-cylinder unit. Power was delivered to the rear wheels through a three-speed sliding transmission with floor-mounted shift and braking was on the rear wheels only, normally fitted with wood-spoked wheels (disc wheels were an option on open cars but standard issue on closed models). Chevrolet offered a choice of factory bodies on the 1925 range, including the usual roadster, tourer, coupe and sedan styles. Some minor changes were made to improve the looks of the '25 models, including a new radiator design and cars delivered later in the year came with Klaxon horns and a walnut steering wheel. The Chevrolets were a popular choice in Australia and usually fitted with coachwork by local body builders like Holden adapted for local conditions. These rugged vintage cars, with reliable mechanicals and relatively simple construction, are an ideal proposition for club events today.
