Porsche's first genuine supercar, the 930 Turbo, arrived in 1975 and was essentially a road-going version of the turbocharged 911 RSR that had dominated the 1974 World Sports Car Championship. Underneath the massive whale-tail, Porsche's flat six sported an exhaust-driven KKK turbocharger with an oil cooler and the latest Bosch K-jetronic fuel injection. With 6.5:1 compression ratio and 260 bhp on tap, the 930 was Porsche's most powerful road car yet. As the 911's five-speed gearbox wasn't strong enough to handle the 406 lb/ft of torque developed by engine, a tougher four-speeder was used instead. Flared guards housed wider Fuchs alloy wheels shod with massive Pirelli P7 rubber, while spoilers front and rear helped provide sufficient downforce to keep the Turbo glued to the road. As time went by, small but significant changes were progressively made to the specification, including 16-inch wheels in 1977 and an increased engine capacity of 3.3-litres for 1978, accompanied by a new air-to-air intercooler. With power boosted to 300 bhp and even greater performance, Porsche answered one major criticism levelled at the Turbo by improving the brakes, using the same cross-drilled four caliper items originally found on the legendary 917 sports racers. For the last two years of production, Porsche expanded the Turbo range to include both the Cabriolet and Targa variants. As time passes, the Turbo has now moved towards classic status with even the last examples of the 930 now almost 20 years old, and now is a great time to buy one, before values begin to climb rapidly.
