The classic F-series Ford pickup was restyled for 1957, with modern, squared-off lines that did away with the dated pontoon-type front fenders and the new look was both wider and lower than before. Although the traditional Flareside bed (with wooden floorboards) was still available, Ford's big news was the all-steel Styleside with greater load area and the F-series was sold with one of two wheelbase lengths, measuring either 110-inches or 118-inches. The suspension was markedly improved, with fewer leaves and longer, wider springs and the ride was far more comfortable as a result. For 1958, the styling underwent some minor revisions, with a new egg-crate grille, four headlamps instead of two and an expanded choice of colours. Inside the cab, there were more safety features, better standard equipment and instrumentation, making the F-100 seem more car-like than ever. The F-100 buyer could choose from three engines, including a 223-cid six-cylinder, 272-cid V8 or the most powerful 292-cid V8 along with a number of transmission options. The F-series pickup is an American icon and has, for many years now, been the best selling vehicle in that country. The F-100 has transcended its original design brief as a tough workhorse and become a vehicle for all seasons, with classic Fifties examples now proving very collectible.
