America's only real sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette, underwent a radical makover for 1984 and the new C4 was hailed by the motoring press as being truly world class, with Motor Trend magazine naming it ?Car of the Year?. With sleek new aero styling, the Corvette had distinctive features like the clam-shell bonnet and one-piece lift out roof but was still instantly recognisable for what it was. In keeping with Corvette tradition, the bodyshell was moulded from fibreglass but the new model saw the liberal use of aluminium in the structure to save weight. An advanced five-link independent rear suspension was employed along with Girling disc brakes all round. Powering the C4 was the potent Cross-Fire 350-cid V8 engine with four-speed manual gearbox as standard, although the Turbo Hydramatic transmission would prove a popular option. Inside, the Corvette's cabin was filled with state of the art technology, including an electronic dashboard, power windows and air conditioning all standard equipment. The C4 was more than just a pretty face - when journalists took the new Vette onto the skidpan, they recorded the best lateral acceleration figures seen on a standard production car and raved about the surefooted handling. It's no surprise to find that Chevrolet managed to set new sales records with the C4 - with no fewer than 51,547 built in 1984, there was a rush to own the best version of the Corvette yet.
