The first generation of America's own sports car, the Chevrolet Corvette, had undergone a number of significant changes by the early 1960s. With the introduction of the classic small-block V8 in 1955, the Corvette finally had the performance to match its fabulous looks. The styling underwent a major revision in 1956, with side coves and toothy grille and for 1958 four chrome-ringed headlamps altered the frontal appearance. The final model year before the introduction of the Sting Ray was 1962, distinguished by the blacked-out grille, lack of chrome trim on the side coves and ribbed chrome rocker panels. New features included an electric clock, twin exhaust system, seatbelts, heater and tacho. Although a three-speed manual was standard, there was a choice of automatic transmission or four-speed floor-shift gearbox, along with Heavy Duty brakes and suspension and various other performance enhancing options. The early 'Vettes are great looking cars that had, by the early Sixties, become real driver's cars and are always in high demand with collectors.
