The quintessential Italian design icon of the post-war era, the Vespa scooter was popularised by movie stars - never more famously than Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in "Roman Holiday" - and became an essential accessory for those enjoying La Dolce Vita. The Mod movement of the 1960s reinforced the scooters place at the forefront of popular culture and Vespas built from the classic era are now sought after the world over. Mechanically robust, the 150cc single-cylinder engine and four-speed constant mesh gearbox were capable of withstanding tremendous punishment from riders of varying abilities and provided lively performance while the large frame models had excellent handling. The Vespa has a lot to recommend it as a commuter vehicle today - stylish, practical and a good investment, they can be parked anywhere and are environmentally sound as well.
