1976 MGB GT

The universally popular MGB was originally launched in September 1962 as a direct replacement for the MGA and the innovative new monocoque shell came with an enlarged version of the faithful B-Series engine to give decent sports car performance. With twin SU carburettors, the 1798cc motor developed 95bhp and drove through a four-speed gearbox (with overdrive optional) while disc brakes up and large drums at the rear front ensured the car stopped as well. The appeal of the MGB was further extended in October 1965 with the arrival of a fixed-head model, the attractive lines penned by Sydney Enever combining plenty of headroom with a practical tailgate giving access to the huge boot area. The snug cabin had, in addition to occasional rear seats, a proper heater and heated rear window, making this an MG for all seasons and was generally regarded as a more upmarket proposition than its roadster sibling. Improvements to the MGB range over the years included an all-synchromesh gearbox, better electrics and other detail changes but the original character of the model was happily retained until the demise of Abingdon in 1980. The MGB GT is a great classic today, with plenty of performance, excellent handling and great looks. More of a rarity and certainly more practical than a roadster, the GT is affordable to maintain, with no shortage of parts or specialists and a strong network of local clubs make ownership a real pleasure.
