Apart from the high performance 300-series, the most exclusive model in Chrysler's range during the fabulous 1950s was the New Yorker, built on the longest 126-inch wheelbase in no less than five basic body styles ranging from a sedan, hardtop (ie. pillarless) coupe or sedan, convertible and station wagon. Powering the 1960 New Yorker range was a massive 413-cid V8 with a compression ratio of 10.0:1 and power output of 350bhp at 4600rpm. Externally, the New Yorker was a continuation of Virgil Exner's "Forward Look" styling themes but underneath the 1960 models saw a switch to uni-body construction for the first time. The New Yorker displayed all of Chrysler's wizardry inside, featuring the 'Astrodome' dashboard display, push-button gear selection, power windows and both the steering and braking systems were power-assisted. In total, just 2,835 of the stylish hardtop coupes were built in 1960 with a factory list price of $4,461 and very few have ever made it to Australia. With renewed interest in Mopar products thanks to the reintroduction of the 300C series, there has never been a better time to invest in a classic Chrysler product and this New Yorker Coupe is a rare survivor from the chrome era.
