The oldest surviving name in American automobile production, Oldsmobile can trace its history back to the beginning of the Twentieth Century and, by the early 1960s, had established a niche building individualistic, luxurious and sometimes innovative models like the front-wheel drive Toronado. Introduced for the 1964 model year was the stylish Oldsmobile Jetstar I, available only with a hardtop coupe body featuring elegant pillarless styling, largely doing away with the excess decoration in favour of crisper, cleaner lines. With a base price of $3,592, the Jetstar was loaded with equipment such as bucket seats, a padded dash, centre console, carpeting and upholstery trim in a choice of vinyl, cloth or leather. Mechanically, the Jetstar was identical to the Starfire and 98 Custom Series, with a V-8 displacing 394-cid and developing 345bhp. A new three-speed Hydra-Matic automatic transmission with a torque converter dubbed the 'Accel-A-Rotor'. In total just over 16,000 Jetstars were built in 1964 and few of this rare American classic have ever made it to Australia - this must certainly be the best example in the country.
