Founded by former racer and Harley-Davidson apprentice engineer Erik Buell in 1982, initially to build racing specials, the first production Buell model - a sportbike using a Harley twin engine as a fully-stressed member of the frame and known as the RR1000 - was launched in 1987. Buell developed a reputation for innovation, his patented 'Uniplanar' rubber mountings and unconventional rear suspension two of the more significant developments. Harley-Davidson, looking to move into the sportbike market, formed a partnership with Buell in February 1994 and became the majority partner in 1998. The Buell offered here is a X1 Lightning built in 2001 one of the last steel frame bikes using the Dynamic digital fuel injected 1200cc Sportster twin, substantially reworked with higher compression pistons, larger valves and reprofiled ports. The X1 Lightning replaced the original S-series Lightning in 1999 and is best described as a "Streetfighter", with terrific power, excellent handling from the short wheelbase and plenty of attitude.
