Four decades on from the launch of the first Mustang in 1964, Ford unveiled a new model for 1994 featuring a revised version of the Fox platform with wider track and longer wheelbase for improved handling and curvaceous new styling with many cues from its forebears. The latest Mustang introduced safety features like twin airbags and the option of four-wheel disc brakes and ABS while a 3.8-litre V6 became the new base engine, although the 5-litre V8 remained a popular option, as did the four-speed automatic transmission. For 1996, there was a new single-overhead camshaft 4.6-litre modular V8 engine with better breathing and this was rated at 215bhp at 4400rpm. A new Borg-Warner T45 five-speed gearbox was made available along with minor revisions to the trim and new taillamps, with triple vertical bars to set the 1996 models apart. The performance GT package included quad shock sports suspension, unique 17-inch alloy rims, rear spoiler and fog lamps while the interior benefited from sports seats and leather steering wheel. Although the Mustang GT Convertible proved popular in America, with 17,917 built in 1996, relatively few have been imported to Australia and those that do make it here are in high demand with collectors around the country.
