Freshly restyled for 1970, changes to Chevrolet's popular Camaro were more than just skin deep. Whereas the first generation Camaro had been burdened with the same basic platform as ecomony cars likes the Nova, the new model was designed and built on a unique 2+2 platform that ensured a much better handling car capable of realising the full potential of the range of high performance engines offered. The new F-body was longer, lower and wider and most pundits agreed it had a more sophisticated, European look than its predecessor. There were six engines available, ranging from a six-cylinder through the base 307-cid V8 to a full-house 396-cid unit pumping out 350bhp along with a choice of four transmissions. As usual, the customer was encouraged to personalise his or her new Camaro and within the many options packages was RPO Z22, GM's internal coding for the Rally Sport kit with blacked-out grille, different front bumpers, recessed windscreen wipers and unique badging amongst other things. With the craze for muscle cars both here and in America reaching new heights, the opportunity to purchase something a little different like the Camaro Rally Sport on offer here is all too rare and the car offers excellent potential to be turned into a consistent show winner or could simply be enjoyed as is.
