The Triumph TR series proved a worthy challenger to the MG and most agree the prettiest of the lot was the TR4, launched in 1961 with sophisticated new styling by Italian designer Michelotti. Retaining the proven mechanicals of earlier models, the TR4 had a rugged 2.2-litre four-cylinder engine developing a useful 100bhp, a new all-synchromesh gearbox and wider front and rear track for improved handling along with rack-and-pinion steering. Further enhancing the upmarket feel of the latest Triumph were nice touches like wind-up windows, the option of a versatile hard-top roof with removable panel and more creature comforts for the occupants. A revised model, designated the TR4A, was introduced in early 1965 with an independent rear end derived from the 2000 saloon giving much better grip while the engine now had 104bhp and 132lb/ft of torque thanks to revised cam timing, improved cooling and better breathing. Stylish, sporting and individualistic, the TR4A Triumph is a great alternative to the far more common MGBs and is the perfect car for a weekend jaunt.
