The Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow was undoubtedly the most significant model produced at Crewe, bringing the Flying Lady into the modern era with a host of changes over the outgoing Silver Cloud at the time it was unveiled in 1965. With unitary construction, advanced self-levelling and fully independent suspension, disc brakes all round and bodywork in keeping with the latest styling trends, the new Rolls-Royce was technically innovative and met with general acclaim, both critically and, more crucially, with customers around the world who bought them in greater numbers than any previous model. The cabin retained that indefinable quality that sets a Rolls-Royce apart from any other car, with the finest quality materials and standards of workmanship applied to each and every detail. In February 1977 Rolls-Royce announced the Silver Shadow II with numerous improvements, including a sophisticated split-level climate control system and revised fascia with electronic speedometer. Mechanically, the Shadow II came with SU HIF7 carburettors and a twin exhaust system to simultaneously improve fuel consumption and performance, along with revised front suspension geometry and new rack and pinion steering to sharpen up the handling. A new chin spoiler and energy absorbing bumpers (with rubber inserts) set the second generation Silver Shadow apart externally. Built in relatively low numbers before the new Silver Spirit was unveiled in 1980, with just under 8,500 made, the Silver Shadow II is a desirable and surprisingly affordable luxury saloon to own and run.
