Taking the previous CS coupe model further upmarket, BMW's new E24 6 Series was a smooth, elegantly luxurious GT utilising the Bavarian marque's superb range of in-line six-cylinder engines - in either 630 CS carburetted form or with Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection for the 633 CSi - at the time of their launch in 1976.

Two years later the range was expanded to include the 635 CSi with significantly more power from the bigger engine, a front air dam, bootlid spoiler and a five-speed gearbox standard although the ZF automatic remained a popular option. The new coupe could boast adequate room for four adults in the beautifully appointed interior and the cockpit-like instrumentation set the standard for generations of BMWs to come.

One notable feature was the introduction of the check control system, a central panel of warning lights to monitor light bulbs, fluid levels and brake pads. Although less overtly sporting than its predecessor, the 6 Series nonetheless enjoyed a long race career and Aussies will no doubt recall the sinister black and gold JPS cars campaigned by the likes of Jim Richards in Group A events of the1980s. Refined, elegant and discreetly luxurious, the 6 Series has aged well and is still a rewarding driving experience today.
