For many enthusiasts, the final 2.4 litre incarnations of the long wheelbase 'F' bodied cars built in 1972/73 are the definitive early 911s.
Retaining the trademark styling of the original 911 first shown in 1963, the 2.4 range benefited from a long-stroke version of the original Type 901 six-cylinder engine introduced to meet toughening American emission laws, giving them substantially more torque at lower revs for easier day-to-day driving. The 911 Targa followed the Coupe onto the market in 1965 and established its own following, particularly amongst West Coast American buyers.
The model featured a unique combined B-pillar and roll hoop with a fixed glass rear window in later models, with the central fabric section able to be removed and collapsed to store in the front boot.
The Sportomatic three-speed semi-automatic transmission with gear-lever sensitive clutch operation, was also available as an alternative to the four and five-speed manual transmission. The 911T was the entry model of the 911 2.4 range and its 2,341cc flat six engine was fed by Solex-Zenith carburettors rather than the mechanical fuel injection of the 2.4 litre 911 E and 911 S models. It produced 130HP at 5.600rpm.
