By the late Twenties Chevrolet were well and truly established itself as the most serious competition to Ford and finally overtook its main rival in the marketplace in 1927.
For 1928, the final year Chevrolet offered a four-cylinder car, the Model AB National was announced as a competitor to Ford's new Model A - and was a bigger car all round, with a wheelbase stretched to 107-inches, new full-crown fenders and a higher cowl line.
Developing a sturdy 35hp, the four-cylinder engine drove through a three-speed gearbox and - big news - brakes were now fitted to all four wheels for added safety, along with a lighted instrument cluster. Another new feature on the '28 Chevrolets was the Alemite chassis lubrication system. In addition to the cars built in the various American factories, Chevrolet of Canada also built 69,217 cars in 1928, some of them earmarked for export.
