The third generation Pontiac Firebird was launched in 1982 and retained a traditional front-engine, rear-drive layout. However, the aerodynamic new F-body was now of unitary construction, smaller and lighter but with more interior and luggage space than ever before. Notable features included the frameless rear hatchback and halogen headlamps hidden in the chiselled nose.

The interior is said to have been inspired by the aviation industry, particularly in the cockpit-like dashboard and some important improvements 'such as the adoption of adjustable seatbacks' were made. Powering the new Firebird were engines ranging from the 2.5-litre four-cylinder, a 2.8-litre V6 and a 5-litre V8 and the buyer had a seemingly endless choice of handling, trim and performance packages.

Thanks to the cult television series 'Knight Rider' high-tech image of the new Firebird was further enhanced. In 1985 the Firebird was freshened up, with a more rounded and aggressive appearance while the interior was similarly revised. By the time this car was built, in 1986, all Firebirds were equipped with Rally Tuned suspension, fuel injection on all three engines with either five-speed manual or Turbo Hydramatic transmissions as standard.
