Introduced in late 1977 the Saab Turbo was the world?s first standard production car to feature turbocharging, with forced induction seen as a means of gaining additional power without sacrificing fuel economy. Based on the existing 99, the new model featured a Garrett turbo operating at a maximum 0.7 bar boost on the 1985cc four-cylinder engine to give 145bhp and impressive performance.

The following year the 900 Turbo appeared and although the outward appearance remained largely unchanged over the next ten years, under the bonnet changes continued apace - in 1980 an Automatic Performance Control system regulated turbo boost to allow the engine to run on different fuel and in 1984 a 16-valve engine with twin-overhead cams and 175bhp on tap. Further enhancing the appeal of the Saab, a cabriolet version was offered in 1987 along with revised bumpers, water-cooling for the turbo and the option of ABS.
