Launched in 1974 to general acclaim, Citroen's replacement for the DS - the new CX- was awarded Car of the Year amongst other accolades and was a resounding sales success, remaining in production for well over a decade. The CX brought the DS concept up to date, retaining the front wheel drive layout and self-levelling hydropneumatic independent suspension system with advanced, sleekly aerodynamic styling and a futuristic interior.
Top of the CX range from 1978 was the performance oriented GTi model, featuring a five-speed gearbox and Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection to boost output, along with niceties like stylish alloy wheels, front fog lights and a rear spoiler. In July 1983 the engine capacity was increased to 2.5-litres and the interior of the GTi was suitably enhanced with electric windows and the option of leather upholstery. The CX is recognised by many as one of the last Citroen's to employ the original thinking that characterised the marque for so many years and stands out as one of the few stylish, innovative cars to appear in an otherwise dull decade of automobile design.
