Likened by some to a five-seater E-Type, Jaguar's sensational new luxury car 'the Mark 10' was launched alongside the legendary two-seater in 1961 and was a real advance over the dated Mark 9, boasting monocoque construction, fully independent styling and sleek styling that managed to disguise the massive bulk of this imposing machine (it remained the widest British car made until the XJ220 supercar came along three decades later).

With a mechanical specification virtually identical to that found on the legendary E-Type, the Mark 10 was endowed with excellent performance 'the 3.8-litre XK unit had triple carburettors and 265bhp on tap' and handling proved equally sure-footed. The lavish interior was upholstered in leather hides with plenty of burr walnut on the dash and rear folding picnic tables and remains a supremely comfortable place to watch the world slip by. The number of surviving Mark 10s has dwindled over the years as a great number were broken up for parts 'the independent rear ends were particularly sought after by hot rodders' and it is only now that enthusiasts are coming to fully appreciate the virtues of this undervalued super saloon that values are beginning to climb to levels where restoration can prove economically worthwhile.
