Description
One of the hottest and most desirable bikes created by a company famous for building two-wheeled legends, the Ducati 916 SPS Carl Fogarty Replica was a limited-edition homologation special based on the 916, itself one of the most potent and stunning looking motorcycles ever sold to the public. In 1997, the 916 Sport Production Special was introduced, virtually a race bike for the road, with the bigger 996cc engine boasting a new cylinder head design, Termignoni exhaust system, titanium con-rods and numerous other revisions to give a claimed 134bhp at 10,500rpm along with a close-ratio gearbox, improved Brembo front brake callipers and a unique carbon-fibre exhaust shield.
For 1998, a new frame made of lighter steel tubing was adopted, along with a carbon-fibre airbox and Showa front forks with Brembo gold series front forks. In order to homologate further changes for World Superbike racing, the Carl Fogarty Replica was built in strictly limited numbers during 1998 to allow changes to the rear bracing tube to be used on the race bikes.
In addition to the racing decals, Marchesini five-spoke wheels, a titanium exhaust system, carbon-fibre seat with Tecnoseal seat pad and Fogarty signatures set the bike apart and it was only made available in England. The SPS was no show pony either - road testers raved about the stunning performance matched with uncompromised, race-bred handling. With no less than four World Superbike Championships during the 1990s, Carl Fogarty enshrined the 916/996 in the pantheons of motorcycle stardom and the SPS Replica bearing his signature is one of the rarest and most collectible variants of this legendary machine.
