The stylish W111 Coupes and Cabriolets introduced in 1961 culminated in the 280SE 3.5 built between August 1969 and Jul 1971. Employing the new M116 V8 with five bearing crankshaft, Bosch electronic fuel injection and single overhead camshaft per bank, the advanced new powerplant developed 200bhp at 5800rpm and gave a significant performance boost over the older six-cylinder models - the 0-100km/h time dropped well below ten seconds and the top speed rose to 200km/h.

Standard transmission was a four-speed automatic, with a four-speed manual are rare option. The classical styling of the flagship series was altered slightly at the front, with a lower and wider grille and stacked headlamps. The beautifully appointed cabin was further enhanced with the addition of electric windows, air conditioning and premium stereo all standard.

A total of 4,502 280SE 3.5 Coupes and Cabriolets were built and the V8 models are considered by enthusiasts to be the most collectible of the W111 breed. Most of these went to America and surviving examples of the 245 right-hand drive coupes made are coveted by their fortunate owners.
