Description

For 1968, Shelby production shifted to Metuchen, New Jersey for initial assembly then cars were transported to Ionia, Michigan where Shelby components were added at the A.O.Smith Company facility. The Shelby range for 1968 - now using the Cobra name - consisted of the small-block GT350 and big-block GT500, with the addition of convertible versions of either model. Unique styling, with fibreglass additions, helped distinguish the model from lesser Mustangs, with '65 Thunderbird rectangular taillights and longer grille (with inset driving lights) adding a purposeful appearance. Functional side scoops on the side panels and quarter panels plus unique steel wheels and stripes further enhanced the aggressive look of the new model. Inside the Deluxe Mustang interior was augmented by a centre console complete with Stewart-Warner oil pressure and alternator gauges along with a standard roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts. The 428-cid V8 had a Holley 7150-cfm carburettor on an aluminium manifold and was rated at 360 horsepower. A choice of transmission options was available - either the four-speed close-ratio top loader manual box or C-6 automatic. In total, 1,020 GT500 fastbacks were built in 1968 and, like all of Carroll Shelby's products, all are now regarded as blue-chip muscle cars.

History

Documented by the Shelby American Registry, this 1968 GT500 has build number 00635 and started life in Dearborn, Michigan as a Ford promotional vehicle. The car ended up in New York by the early 1970s and remained with the one owner until being sold to the present owner in 2005, whereupon it was imported into Australia. The Shelby underwent a total restoration in the mid-1990s to concours standard and has been rarely driven ever since - it has 83,000 miles showing. The vehicle comes with a long list of optional equipment, including the wheel lip moldings, tilt-away steering column, extra cooling package and the Interior Décor Group, AM radio, tacho and trip odometer. The car sits on a set of desirable 10-spoke Shelby cast aluminium 15-inch rims. Although the Marti report accompanying the car indicates it has saddle interior, this is incorrect - the door data tag indicates that '00635' has always been black inside. The Shelby also comes with the original warranty plate and owner's manual. To be sold unregistered.
