NSW CTP Car & Motorcycle Insurance
Faster, easier NSW Green Slips are here
On the 23rd of March 2015 a new, faster process for collecting your personal details and vehicle information will be/has been introduced. For the purchase of a green slip.
What is changing?
To buy a new Green Slip you simply need to provide us with two (2) pieces of information to help us identify you and your vehicle. These details are located on your RMS registration papers.
We use this information to retrieve your registration details from RMS, saving you time and ensuring that the correct CTP premium is calculated, providing the information is correct.
What are the benefits of the changes?
The changes have been made to benefit you in two ways:
Faster vehicle registration
- Reduced information required to purchase a new Green Slip
- Immediate transfer of CTP details to RMS including new registrations that currently require a hard copy CTP receipt to be presented
Correct premium guaranteed
- Your premium will take into account your registration details retrieved from RMS
What does this mean for you?
- You will need the listed information to buy a CTP Green Slip policy, however if you don't have it we can provide you with a quote.
- You need to make sure the details listed with RMS are correct. Contact RMS to make any changes on 13 33 13 before arranging/paying your CTP Green Slip.
- You no longer need to provide RMS with a hardcopy of your CTP Green Slip. Confirmation is sent electronically to RMS immediately on receipt of payment.
Please see our FAQs section for more information relating to these changes.
Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury (CTP) Insurance, also known as CTP Green Slip Insurance, must be purchased before a car or motorcycle can be registered in NSW.
CTP Green Slip Insurance provides compensation for people injured in a motor vehicle accident, however, cover for injuries to the driver/rider who causes the accident are limited.
CTP protects the owner of the vehicle, or any other person who at anytime drives/rides the vehicle/motorcycle, against claims for liability in respect of the death or injury to a person caused by the fault of the owner or driver/rider of the vehicle/motorcycle found to be at fault. If you do not have a CTP Green Slip for your vehicle, you could be personally liable for an injury compensation claim which could reach millions of dollars.
Shannons NSW Green Slip Insurance is for existing Shannons motor policy holders, and is only available on vehicles insured with Shannons.
Easy Online Quoting
Existing Shannons motor vehicle insurance customers wanting a CTP Quote will need to log into My Insurance to get an online quote with Shannons.
For those customers not already registered with My Insurance, you can take a tour that explains the steps in the registration process or complete a few simple questions (Name/DOB/Suburb/postcode/Policy number) and once registered you can access a CTP quote.
What information will you have to provide?
If you are purchasing a new Green Slip to renew your vehicle registration, you can simply provide us with:
- Your Billing Number and
- Your Plate Number
Don't have your registration papers handy or starting a new registration?
No problem. You can instead provide us with:
- Your Plate Number (registration renewal), or VIN or Chassis number (new registration), and
- Your NSW Driver or Rider Licence number, RMS Customer Number or NSW Photocard Number
Note: Other combinations of identifiers can be used. See our FAQs for more details

Q: What is changing for me?
A: From 23rd March 2015, new information will be required to be provided to purchase a Green Slip
Q: Why is it changing?A: These changes are being introduced by all NSW CTP insurers and are designed to improve your buying experience and reduce the time taken to register your vehicle.
Q: How will I benefit from this change?
A: The changes are designed to benefit you in three ways:
- Less information will have to be provided to purchase a new Green Slip
- Your CTP details will be sent to Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) immediately so that you can register your vehicle straight away. This will include first time registrations that currently require a hard copy CTP receipt to be presented
- Ensuring you are charged the correct premium. Your premium will be based on the registration details retrieved from RMS
Q: What do I need?
A: You will be required to provide two pieces of information to assist us in identifying you and your vehicle. The details can easily be located on your RMS registration papers, so make sure you have them handy.
Q: How can I prepare for this change?
A: Make sure the details showing on the registration papers are correct. If they are not correct you may be charged the incorrect CTP Premium. If any of your registration details require updating please contact RMS on 13 22 13 prior to purchasing the Green Slip. CTP Insurers won't be able to update them for you.
Q: What identifiers do I need to provide to purchase a Green Slip to renew my registration?
A: If a Green Slip is being purchased to renew your vehicle's registration, you will need:
- Your RMS Billing Number and
- Your Plate Number
Q: What identifiers do I need to provide to purchase a Green Slip to start a new registration?
A: If a Green Slip is being purchased to start a new registration, you will need:
- The vehicle's VIN, Engine and/or Chassis Number and
- The NSW Driver or Rider Licence, NSW Photocard Number or RMS Customer Number of the registered operator
Q: What if I don't have my registration papers handy?
A: If you want to purchase a Green Slip to renew your vehicle's registration, you will need:
- Your Plate Number and
- The NSW Driver or Rider Licence, NSW Photocard Number or RMS Customer Number of the registered operator Note that, if the vehicle is registered in the name of a company, the only identifier that can be provided is the RMS Customer Number.
Q: What other vehicle identifiers can I use to purchase a CTP?
A: You can provide your VIN Number, Engine Number or Chassis Number.
Q: What if I don't have the identifiers required for my Green Slip?
A: You will still be able to obtain a Green Slip quote if you don't have the required identifiers, but you will not be able to purchase a policy.
Q: What if I have recently acquired a vehicle that is due for registration?
A: If the vehicle has only recently been acquired, please ensure that you have completed the change of ownership with RMS at https://www.myrta.com or a Green Slip may not be able to be purchased.
Q: Will my CTP details be sent electronically to the RMS?
A: Yes, your CTP details will be sent electronically to RMS immediately for both new and existing registrations, removing the need to provide RMS with a hard copy Green Slip or receipt.
Q: I have just moved to NSW. How do I purchase a Green Slip?
A: If you have just moved to NSW and your vehicle is still registered interstate, you will still be able to purchase a Green Slip to establish your registration by providing a vehicle identifier.
If you have just moved from interstate or overseas and have bought a vehicle that is registered in NSW, you should ensure that the registration has been transferred into your name prior to purchasing a CTP policy. Failure to do so could mean you will be unable to purchase a policy.
Q: Will there be any changes to my CTP cover?
A: No, there are no changes to your benefits under the Compulsory Third Party Personal Injury Insurance Scheme.
Q: Will you still send me a renewal invitation?
A: Yes, you will still receive a renewal invitation 4 to 6 weeks prior to expiry.
Q: Is my privacy protected with this change?
A: CTP insurers will only be retrieving information from RMS that is necessary to provide you with an accurate CTP quote. While details relating to your vehicle and its registration will be returned by RMS (eg Make, Model, Year of Manufacture, Registered Usage), the only personal details obtained will be the date of birth of the registered operator and the suburb & postcode where the vehicle is garaged. This information has always been required to be provided when purchasing a CTP policy.
