The final blow. Toyota to cease local automotive manufacturing in 2017

By MarkOastler - 11 February 2014

The mass produced Australian-made car has officially been consigned to history following Toyota Australia’s inevitable announcement this week that it will stop building cars in Australia by 2017.

Local manufacturing of the Camry, Camry Hybrid and Aurion vehicles, as well as the production of four cylinder engines, will cease by the end of 2017. Toyota Australia will then follow former local manufacturers Ford Australia and GM-Holden in becoming a full-time vehicle importer.

Approximately 2,500 employees directly involved with manufacturing will lose their jobs when the company’s Melbourne plant stops building cars in 2017. The knock-on effect in terms of job losses for the industry’s many outsourced component suppliers is yet to be determined but will be far-reaching.
