• Strong results for ‘in demand’ models

• Australian Classic perform well

• Enthusiasts predict a ‘buoyant’ year

While a restored and locally-delivered 1960 Volkswagen Kombi Samba Bus sold for $202,000 stole the show at Shannons February 23 Melbourne Late Summer Auction, a number of other Classics posted impressive results in the $1.35 million sale.

This very low mileage 1961 EK Special Sedan from a private WA collection sold for with ‘no reserve’ for an excellent $32,000.

They included:

• A pair of EK Holdens from a WA collection – a rare surviving 1962 Utility that had been laid up for many years that sold for $30,500 and a 1961 Special Sedan with less than 10,000 miles showing on its odometer that made $32,000.

They were amongst the 21 Classics in the auction to be offered with ‘no reserve’ and both exceeded their high estimates.

This 1955 Jaguar XK140 Fixed Head Coupe featuring numerous mechanical upgrades sold for $84,000.

• A Deep Red 1955 Jaguar XK140 Fixed Head Coupe in older-restored condition, with featuring numerous mechanical upgrades including power steering, disc brakes and air conditioning to make it more usable in modern traffic, which sold for $84,000

• An Australian-delivered 1967 Mercedes-Benz 250SL Convertible equipped with both soft and hard tops believed to have had just three owners from new that sold for $73,000

1937 Australian-bodied Pontiac Businessman’s Coupe

• A very rare 1937 Australian-bodied Pontiac Businessman’s Coupe in lovely condition sold for $27,000

• A rare surviving 1927 Bean 18/50 6-Cylinder Tourer featuring an older restoration, sold for $21,000

1976 Cadillac Eldorado Convertible

• A 1976 right hand drive Cadillac Eldorado Convertible offered with ‘no reserve’ made an excellent $29,500.

With its excellent overall clearance rate of 92 per cent of all lots, Shannons first 2015 Classic Auction started the year in style.

As a result, Classic vehicle enthusiasts are now looking forward to Shannons Autumn Auction in Sydney on Monday (March 2) with enhanced interest.

There, Heritage black and white numerical number plates, rather than Classics, are expected to be the stars, with Shannons expecting a similar result for the 24 numerical plates on offer  - 18 with no reserve - to achieve more than $1.1 million alone if they reach or exceed their pre-auction high estimate.

However a vehicle that could deliver a knockout punch to the best of the three-digit plates in the auction for the best result in the sale is a very low kilometre 2001 Bentley Arnage Red Label Saloon owned by champion Aussie boxing legend Kostya Tszyu.

With just 43,000km covered from new and beautifully presented, inside and out, the Bentley is expected to sell in the $95,000-$120,000 range.
