• Highly-collectible GT-HO Phase 2 from long-term ownership
• Sought-after 1972 Monaro LS 253 V8
• Superb 1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 Fastback
Santa is coming early at Shannons, with half the 42 classic cars and motorcycles in Shannons upcoming Melbourne Summer Auction on December 8 being offered with ‘no reserve’.
The absolute highlight for Australian Muscle Car enthusiasts and collectors is a 1970 Ford XW GT-HO Phase 2 Falcon owned by an Australian motorsport ‘living treasure’ who was part of the winning team of three Ford Falcon GTs in the 1968 London-Sydney Marathon.
His beloved GT-HO, which he has owned since 1985, is now looking for a new home.
One of just 42 cars built in September 1970 and one of only 15 finished in ‘Silver Fox’ metallic (the nick-name of then Ford race and rally car builder, Harry Firth), the HO is fresh from long-term dry storage for the past 16 years and is presented in mostly sound condition.
As the first of these highly-prized and very collectible Australian Muscle Cars to come to auction for some time and is expected to sell in the $100,000-$120,000 range – a realistic expectation according to Shannons and well below the peak prices these cars achieved in the pre-GFC years.
For those who miss out on the GT-HO, here is a desirable 1975 Holden LH Torana SL/R 5000 sedan that has benefited from considerable mechanical refurbishment in recent years, with some components updated to most desirable L34 specification.
Wearing the L34’s trademark bolt-on wheel-arch flares, L34-specification heads and a fully balanced and over-bored 308 V8 motor bolted to a four-speed manual transmission, this desirable SL/R 5000 is expected to find willing bidders in its quoted $28,000-$34,000 selling range.
Another one for the Australian Muscle Car enthusiast is a nicely presented 1972 Holden HQ Monaro LS 253 V8 Coupe finished in the desirable colour scheme of Amethyst with Antique Saddle trim.
This two-owner car with great history is cosmetically in very good condition and has been driven sparingly. Shannons believe the LS Monaro’s increasing collectible value as a second-tier Australian Muscle Car should see keen bidding in its guiding range of $52,000-$58,000.
Finally for Fairlane lovers, there is a beautifully presented and eye-catching Orange with unmarked tan interior 1971 ZD 302 V8 Sedan, which Shannons expect go sell easily in the $25,000-$30,000 range.
Not Australian, but an even more desirable Muscle Car in International circles is a restored right hand drive 1968 Shelby Mustang GT350 Fastback fitted with the model’s 302-cid V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission. It is expected to sell in the $130,000-$150,000 range – comparable to what original left hand drive models are bringing overseas.
Highlights amongst the 21 ‘no reserve’ cars in the Auction include a beautifully-executed 2002 DRB GT40 Replica Coupe ($100,000-$120,000), a left hand drive 1960 Chevrolet Impala 283 convertible ($25,000-$30,000), an older-restored right hand drive 1942 Chevrolet Two-Door Convertible ($30,000-$35,000) and a nicely-presented 1986 Porsche 928S ($12,000-$16,000).
