• ‘No reserve’ sporting classics post good prices

• Good results for Heritage B&W numerical number plates

• Great interest in Classic and Vintage motorcycles

An eclectic range of ‘no reserve’ Classic cars and motorcycles brought solid market prices at Shannons Melbourne Autumn Classic Auction on May 4.

Performance car enthusiasts were rewarded when a genuine right hand drive 1965 Sunbeam Tiger V8 presented in very good condition sold with ‘no reserve’ after vigorous floor and phone bidding for 63,000.

Amongst the mix of Australian ‘Muscle Cars’ on offer, a 1968 Holden HK Monaro Coupe retro-fitted with a 327-cid V8 in place of its original 186-cid six cylinder engine sold on estimate for $54,000, a low kilometre 2007 V8-engined Elfin MS8 Clubman Roadster offered with ‘no reserve’ made $44,000 and a 1973 six-cylinder Holden-engined Bolwell Mk VII coupe in exceptional, restored condition, sold on estimate for $34,000.

Ford fanciers had plenty to smile about, as two of the Auction’s headline cars – a stunning, left-hand-drive 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500 and a right hand drive 1910 Model T Tourer with a great Australian history – sold later for $140,000 and $52,000 respectively.

Although by no means a ‘Muscle Car’, another Australian V8 to punch above its weight was a well care-for 1984 Holden WB Statesman Deville 5.0 litre Sedan, which was offered with ‘no reserve’ and was in demand by floor and phone bidders before selling eventually for $15,000.

Other Classic vehicles to post excellent results were a Swiss-delivered right hand drive 1961 Citroen 2CV sedan believed to have been off the road since the 1970s before being discovered 12 months ago and since recommissioned by its collector owner. It sold for $18,000, underscoring the increasing collectible value of these quintessentially French cars.

An imperious and stately 1924 American Hudson 7-seater with Chauffeur Division and original coachwork in partially-restored condition, sold for $19,500 after strong bidding.

This restored 1947 Chevrolet Tray Truck sold for $25,000 at Shannons Melbourne Autumn Auction on May 4.

Classic commercial vehicle also did well, with an appealing restored 1947 Chevrolet Tray Truck and a ‘no reserve’ 1951 Ford Prefect Utility both selling on or above estimate for $25,000 and $11,500 respectively.

This circa-1913 NSU 500cc V-Twin sold with 'no reserve' for $20,000 at Shannons Melbourne Autumn Auction on May 4.

There was strong demand for the quality range of Classic and Vintage motorcycles in the Auction, with a well-presented and highly-desirable circa-1952 Harley-Davidson ‘Panhead’ 1200cc solo and a circa-1913 NSU 500cc V-Twin – both offered with ‘no reserve’ – the joint top sellers at $20,000.

They were hotly pursued by a circa-1937 Rudge Ulster 500cc solo that made $19,250.

However the most sought-after of the 46 vehicle and 26 memorabilia and automobila lots in the auction were the 10, black and white numerical Victorian number plates, which all attracted strong interest from floor, phone and internet bidders.

The honours for the top selling plate was shared by ‘405’ and ‘512’, which both sold for $61,000, while ‘8.882’ was comfortably the top selling four-digit plate at $26,000 and ’66.668’ returned the best five-digit result at $9,000.
