• Great German, Italian, British and American sporting classics

• 16 rare and special classic motorcycles

• 9 sought-after NSW black and white Heritage number plates, including three low-digit motorcycle plates

Classic car and motorcycle enthusiasts will see ‘Red’ on Monday, August 25, with 12 of the 26 cars and motorcycles in Shannons Winter Classic Auction presented in this passionate hue.

The most sporting and most valuable of the Red set come from Germany and the United States.

This award-winning and rare factory right hand drive 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster is expected to bring $90,000-$100,000.

From Mercedes-Benz there is rare factory right hand drive 1959 Mercedes-Benz 190SL Roadster appealingly finished in Cardinal Red with a cream leather interior.

Coming out of long-term ownership since 1995, the former Adelaide-based SL has been a regular show winner until 2004 and has been a regular and successful participant in classic tours and rallies for the past 15 years.

According to Shannons, the SL presents well, still runs on its original carburettors and comes with a factory hardtop, making it an appealing and very useable classic for collectors. It is realistic priced, with Shannons quoting a conservative $90,000-$100,000 price range.

This superb, Australian-delivered and two-owner 1964 Porsche 356SC Coupe given its exceptional provenance is realistically priced to sell in the $60,000-$80,000 range.

From Stuttgart comes a superb, Australian-delivered and two-owner 1964 Porsche 356SC Coupe finished in Red with typically-Porsche black interior trim.

The Reutter-built, factory right hand drive 1964 model was delivered new by Hamilton’s of Melbourne and still has its original Type 616/16 1600 95HP engine, fitted with the correct 40 PII-4 Solex carburettors.

The current, now-elderly owner – a meticulous and skilled German engineer – purchased the Porsche from his friend and first owner around 40 years ago and has just completed an exhaustive restoration over a 15 year period.

The 356 has seen little use since and presents beautifully, with Shannons believing it to be one of the best 356s on the market today. They expect it to appeal to both Porsche enthusiasts and collectors and are quoting a very realistic $60,000-$80,000 price range, given its exceptional condition and provenance.

Offered with 'no reserve', this stylish right hand drive 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible is expected to appeal to enthusiasts seeking a very useable and affordable restoration project at its expected selling range of $10,000-$14,000.

A cheaper, but equally stylish German option is the Red, right hand drive 1973 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible in the auction. Fitted with the larger 1600cc engine and disc brakes introduced that year, the Karmann Ghia is being offered with ‘no reserve’ and is expected to appeal to enthusiasts seeking a very useable and affordable restoration project at its expected selling range of $10,000-$14,000.

With more than $120,000 invested in its upgrade, this freshly-restored 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback Shelby clone is expected to bring $60,000-$70,000.

American classics are also ‘in the red’ at the Shannons Sydney Auction, led by a freshly-restored (Red with White stripes) 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback Shelby clone.

With more than $120,000 invested in its upgrade to sought-after Shelby specification, this stunning original left hand drive ’66 Mustang presents in exceptional condition, both cosmetically and mechanically and runs a fresh 302 Windsor with four-speed Toploader gearbox. Shannons expect it to bring $60,000-$70,000, a fraction of what would be commanded by a similar, but original Shelby of the same era.

Also ‘Red’ and from the USA is a 1973 Ford Mustang Convertible in good, ready-to-enjoy condition. Converted to right hand drive and equipped with a 351-cid V8 engine and three-speed automatic transmission, Shannons say the Mustang is a great ‘ragtop cruiser’ and believe it will have no trouble finding a new owner at its projected $16,000-$22,000 selling range.

Other ‘Red’ classic cars in the auction include a beautiful and rare 1963 Triumph TR4 ‘Surrey Top’ Coupe ($20,000-$25,000), a restored 1951 MG TD ($18,000-$22,000) and a ‘no reserve’, ready-to-drive 1973 Alfa-Romeo 2000 Spider ($10,000-$14,000).

This 1947 Harley-Davidson U47 1200cc that has benefitted from an engine rebuild is expected to sell in the $18,000-$24,000 range.

Amongst the 16 motorcycles in the auction, the standout ‘Red’ machine is a circa 1947 Harley-Davidson U47 1200cc that has benefitted from an engine rebuild by marque specialists.

Collectable as the last of the 1200 ‘flat-heads’, Shannons say the bike is nicely presented and ready to be enjoyed at its expected selling range of $18,000-$24,000. There is also a ‘Red’ circa-1961 Italian Mondial 125cc in the auction offered with ‘no reserve’ that is expected to bring $5,000-8,000.
