Brno, Czech Republic: MotoGP Pre-Race Report

By FORMULAMotoGPMag - 19 August 2016
The Czech Republic race weekend has started! The fans are ready to rock and roll and the riders have been familiarising themselves when the country before their mental focus shifts to bikes only. The biggest news of the week is that even though Jack Miller was declared fit to race by the medical staff at the circuit, HRC and the rider’s management have decided that he will not take part in the race. Miller will come back for the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. The strength of an athlete is his or her determination to get back out there even with an injury. Jack wanted to ride. With that said, putting him at risk and in pain could do more damage than good. This is something that a team has to consider before allowing the rider to push his limits physically and mentally.

The Brno circuit features an exciting layout with long straights, fast and slow corners where the demand on the tyres will be clear from the start. As a result, Michelin has brought with them a selection of three front tyres, and two brand new rear tyres. The selection process before the lights go out on Sunday will be vital to the success of winning the Brno Grand Prix. There is no doubt about it that the fans will be decked out in various colours and cheering with a nice cold beverage in their hands!

In the Czech Republic, the Yamaha’s are looking strong as the track layout suits their bikes and is much smoother than other circuits. Lorenzo is excited about returning to the Brno circuit as his memories of the races there are great. His feelings are positive and the strength of his mindset increasing race by race. This is very important for the current World Champion. On the other side of the coin, Rossi wants to get back on his bike as soon as possible. Last year he was slower than Valentino and this year he is hoping for it to be the reverse effect. Rossi wants to outperform his rivals.

In the Moto2 class, Zarco is still running away with the Championship although Alex Rins and Tom Luthi are chomping at his heels. This week we interviewed Tom Luthi about his thoughts on the Brno circuit, where he is aiming to improve and who he is as a rider. Here is a small excerpt from the interview on how he sees himself: “I've got a fluent and even riding style - just as the Brno circuit requests it. I think I could improve my characteristics quite well during the past years. I've learned to do better starts and be a bit more aggressive during the first laps of a race. A "perfect rider" though finds for every track the right compromise between an aggressive and an even, tyre conserving riding style. That's a new challenge with every single race. If you are able to just retrieve this special setting for every track, you probably did it.” Tom puts forward an interesting perspective on his he perceives motorcycle racing, what it means to be competitive and how important learning is over time both on a personal and team level. The rest of the interview will be available online later today. In Moto3, Brad Binder the South African Lion is hungry for another victory and to extend his lead even further. Whilst he pushes on forward, the rest of the field will be looking to attack. The one that will not be attacking is Romano Fenati as he was let go by Sky Racing Team VR46 for some off track behaviour that put the team’s morals in question. It is now time to go racing!
