Have you ever pictured yourself playing in an AFL Grand Final at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground? What about screaming “how’s that!” after throwing the winning catch in front of 100,000 screaming fans?

Shannons Supercar Showdown, a new reality television series airing on 7Mate, is giving ten amateur race car drivers from all walks of life (and from all across the globe) a once in a lifetime opportunity to fulfil their sporting dream – to line up on the starting grid at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.

On Monday July 23, Episode One of this exciting new series aired on 7Mate to rave reviews.

Viewers were introduced to ten young, and not so young, hopefuls from Australia and around the world. Please see contestant’s bios attached.

Supercar Showdown mentors and Kelly Racing team owners Rick and Todd Kelly handed straight shooter Jesse Dixon and nice girl Sarah Harley a life line with a non elimination in round one, but both drivers were disappointed that a poor showing from them resulted in a time penalty.

“Going into this week's elimination challenge I'm carrying a penalty, and that means that I'm going to have to step it up. I'm used to punching above my weight, but I definitely have to make sure that I perform,” says Harley.

Rick Kelly knows how important first impressions are and says Jesse and Sarah will have to really step up if they mean to be crowned the 2012 Supercar Showdown winner and race at Bathurst.

“The common mistake made by a lot of young drivers in Australia (trying to make it into V8 Supercars and other big categories around the world) is not actually putting enough effort into the off-track side of the business, and that's just as important as the actual driving” says Kelly.

As the contestants compete in two new challenges, their true characters begin to show. International export Texas Ed proves he doesn’t play well with others, while the girls of the competition begin forming a special bond. And one contestant reveals a surprising family secret which could give him the edge over his competition.

There is no doubt the prize on offer is well worth winning.

“A prize this big, really there's nothing like it anywhere in TV or in sport in general. That's why, throughout the whole of the series we need to be really sure we're picking the absolute right winner at the end of the day” says Rick Kelly.

Shannons Supercar Showdown airs on Mondays at 6.30pm on 7Mate.
