Replacing the F-series in 1961, Vauxhall's second generation FB Victor was a much cleaner, sharper design with modern, three-box styling although the floorpan and underpinnings were largely as before. Suspension was independent up front, with coil springs, and a live rear axle with semi-elliptic springs and Lockheed hydraulic drums all round. The FB was available with a fully synchromesh floor-change four-speed transmission and from early 1964 had a larger 1594cc engine. Offered in three trim levels, the Standard, Super and DeLuxe, the Victor was sold in either sedan or estate versions and for those seeking extra performance Vauxhall introduced the VX4/90 in October 1961 boasting twin carbs, higher compression 71bhp engine and front disc brakes. Pitched as a family car, the new FB Victor had some significant improvements over the outgoing F-series, including much better rust protection. As with so many other British cars of the era, Vauxhall sent the Victor to Australia as complete knock-down kits to be assembled with some local content. In fact, Vauxhall exported Victors to markets all over the world, including Asia, Africa, Canada and New Zealand. When production ceased in 1964, some 328,000 had been made but very few are still on the road today.
