Description

The most desirable T-Series of all, the TF of 1953, was also the last traditional MG. Developed at Abingdon as something of a stop-gap whilst development of the new MGA continued, the TF saw the square-rigger lines of its predecessors subtly modernised. The radiator had a slight rake, the front headlamps were integrated into the front wings and the rear also had a make over but traditional pre-war details like the fold-flat screen and separate wings remained. Inside there was a new dashboard with three octagonal dials and reshaped seats, while the unpopular pressed-steel disc wheels of the TD were ditched in favour of the traditional wires. Mechanically the TF was essentially carried over from the previous model, although the 1250cc XPAG engine was replaced by the 1500cc XPEG mid-way through the production run of 9800 cars - most of them exported to the United States. The TF is still a blast to drive on winding country roads, the superbly weighted rack and pinion steering and predictable handling combine to make every trip an experience to savour. Throw in the thriving MG club scene, numerous local specialists and the ease with which one can work on the TF, and you have a most rewarding classic MG sports car.

History

In fully restored condition, this well presented MG TF was originally delivered on the 11th of January, 1955 and still has the original owner's own service log books documenting all work up to 58,000 miles. Previous owners included Peter Goggin, who bought the car (retaining the original registration number of ATC-319) in September 1965, then Frank Johnson (a former president of the MG Car Club) who purchased the vehicle ten years later and changed the registration number to EV-738. In Johnson's hands, the car was a consistent class winner at various MG Car Club of NSW concours during the 1970s and 1980s before passing into the present ownership approximately five years ago. The MG underwent a complete restoration in 2002, with the body stripped, repaired and repainted, new upholstery, some new chromework (all by Andy's Restorations in Caringbah) with the mechanical side handled by Albert Johnson Restorations of Annangrove. The engine, gearbox, clutch and brakes were all overhauled and the car was then used for weekend pleasure trips in the Southern Highlands. Equipped with side curtains and a tonneau, the MG's hood is in good condition, affording decent protection from inclement weather. To be sold registered in New South Wales along with original factory MG TF workshop manual, parts list and operation manual plus a comprehensive file of history and receipts.
