The upgraded R107 body shape for the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL was first introduced to Europe in 1970 as the 350SL, with the model becoming available in Australia and the USA the following year. In 1979 Mercedes released the 350SL (4.5) Roadster, with its name 'officially' changed to 450SL one year later. A factor behind the increase in engine size was to offset the loss of power from the anti pollution equipment required by the US authorities.

For most enthusiasts, the 450SL with its advanced single overhead camshaft 4.5 litre engine, is the pick of the R107 range (which includes the 350, 380, 560 and 280SLs), because of the longevity and simplicity of its cast iron block V8 engine, which was matched to an equally 'bullet proof' 3 speed automatic transmission.

With some 66,298 examples of the R107 built between 1971 and 1989, parts are readily available, making this a practical and very stylish daily driver.

The 1973 model 450SL being auctioned has had just two owners since new - the first for the first 23 years of its life. The car presents nicely thanks to a recent restoration and both the manually-operated soft-top and factory hardtop are in good condition. The indicated speedometer reading of 161,605 represents a very low annual usage distance.
