Description

The final model of the original Monaro series was the limited edition HX LE coupe introduced in August 1976. Yet while it did not carry the Monaro nameplate, Holden fans regard it as a true blue member of the breed.

The run of just 580 LE coupes was produced at Holden's Pagewood plant in Sydney, which specialised in the exacting low volume assembly of luxury Statesman and Caprice models.

As a tribute to the Monaro heritage, these last coupes were custom-built as top-shelf Holden models, with gold pinstriping and large 'LE' lettering on the model's distinctive metallic crimson.

Four headlight (quartz halogen) HX Premier front and integrated, colour-keyed front and rear spoilers and unique gold-finished 14x7-inch polycast wheels completed the distinctive visual package.

The HX LE came only as a package with Holden's 308-cid V8, the Turbo-Hydramatic transmission and Salisbury limited slip differential - all high-performance Monaro hardware.

The passenger compartment combined GTS features with a walnut finish dash fascia and centre console, with crushed velour and cloth trim.

Its comprehensive equipment listing included power windows, power steering, power aerial, integrated air conditioning, heated rear window, quadraphonic eight-track cartridge player and tinted windows.

History

Sold new in Toowoomba, Queensland, this Monaro is one of only 530 examples of the model built and it is believed to be in the hands of its third owner since new.

The car is in very original condition and comes equipped with its original gold mag wheels, air conditioning, power steering and driving lights.

It also has its original eight-track cartridge stereo system, which although replaced in the dash with a more modern Alpine radio/cassette player, will be included in the sale, along with a number of spare music cartridges.

The Monaro has covered 373,000km and comes with four new tyres and its original books. To be sold unregistered but with a Blue Slip (Roadworthy) if sold in NSW.

This vehicle is now available for inspection at 65 Reserve Road, St Leonards, NSW. Mon-Fri 9am-5pm, Sat 9am-4pm. To arrange a viewing call the New South Wales Auction Team: Ian Clayton on 13 46 46 (ext 4).
